Concurrent Leptospira borgpetersenii Serogroup Ballum and Ehrlichia canis Infection in a Dog in Israel: A Case Report

چکیده
Leptospirosis is an infectious, zoonotic disease of a major worldwide importance of animals and humans (1, 2). It is caused by antigenically distinct serovars of the spirochetal bacterium Leptospira interrogans sensu lato. Over 200 serovars of L. interrogans sensu lato have been described and have been classified in different species (e.g., L. interrogans, L. kirschneri, L. borgpetersenii) (1-5). Antigenically-related serovars have been traditionally also divided into serogroups, based on serological methods. While serogroups have no taxonomic standing, this classification has proven useful for epidemiological purposes (1-3, 5). From a practical point of view, the protection induced by the currently available bacterins is restricted to the particular serogroup used for their production. The classification of leptospires might be somewhat confusing because there is an overlap of serogroups and newer classifications based on molecular methodologies. Historically, leptospirosis was a common disease of dogs, and had been most commonly caused by L. interrogans seConcurrent Leptospira borgpetersenii Serogroup Ballum and Ehrlichia canis Infection in a Dog in Israel: A Case Report

Experimental Hamster Infection with a Strain of Leptospira borgpetersenii Ballum Isolated from a Reservoir Mouse in New Caledonia.
Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis caused by pathogenic Leptospira. In this study, we characterized the virulence of isolate B3-13S obtained from a wild mouse (Mus musculus) captured in New Caledonia, subsequently identified as a bacterium belonging to the L. borgpetersenii serogroup Ballum. Hamsters were infected with an intraperitoneal injection of 2 × 10(8) bacteria, resulting in severe h...
متن کاملGenome of Leptospira borgpetersenii strain 4E, a highly virulent isolate obtained from Mus musculus in southern Brazil
A previous study by our group reported the isolation and characterisation of Leptospira borgpetersenii serogroup Ballum strain 4E. This strain is of particular interest because it is highly virulent in the hamster model. In this study, we performed whole-genome shotgun genome sequencing of the strain using the SOLiD sequencing platform. By assembling and analysing the new genome, we were able t...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Ehrlichia canis in dogs referred to Veterinary Hospital of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Iran
Canine ehrlichiosis is a zoonotic rickettsial disease transmitted by ticks. In the present study, 198 companion dogs of different ages were examined for serum antibody detection against Ehrlichia canis by means of immunochromatography assay. The dogs were selected among referred cases to Veterinary Hospital of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Southwestern Iran from November 2008 to March 201...
متن کاملSeroepidemiology of canine leptospirosis in Ahvaz, Iran
Abstract: The presence of dogs has been identified as a risk factor for human Leptospirosis. The aim of this study was the survey of the current state of leptospiral infection in dogs in Ahvaz. Sera from 100 rural dogs of villages around Ahvaz and 49 urban dogs referred to veterinary hospital of shahid Chamran University were detected for antibodies against serovars canicola, icterohaemorrhagia...

Anaplasma platys, previously known as Ehrlichia platys, which causes infectious canine cyclic thrombocytopenia, has notbeen extensively studied in Southeast Asia. Recent reports in theregion have been limited to ticks and dogs in Thailand, and toticks in the Philippines. In this report, DNAfragments of A. platyswere molecularly detected in a dog in the Philippines. Apitbullpuppy exhibited pancyt...
